A special interview with illustrator BLACK, who worked on the memorial illustration
of Jason from Chapter 5!
What is your favorite thing about the character (Jason) you illustrated?
I love to design tacky-yet-cool things, and there's a lot of that in Jason's design. He has so many styles crammed into one: Greek, 80's rock and roll, the look of a ladies' man... He also has a rock star's sex appeal, what with how he shows off his crotch.
What did you focus on when designing the character, and did you need to make any design changes once you received guidance from the writers, setting, and reference documentation?
There were actually drafts for Jason when he was an NPC, where he initially looked suspiciously benevolent. My draft came back with a direction to make him look more good-looking, which is how he ended up looking the way he is now in the game. His personality hasn't changed much, so while he may be a handsome, he now has a catalog of idiotic expressions to go with it.
What was your inspiration behind drawing the memorial illustration from what was mostly text-based references?
Rather than bask in victorious glory, the expression he has on his face is “ah, it's finally over.” Being somber doesn't suit him, so disappearing with a grin on his face at the very end seemed more fitting for Jason.
